development as it pertains to plate tectonics (volcanic origins). Explain its reef development (biogenic/living origins). What influence did the Ice Age have on Bermuda's geology? (this info is covered at the Saturday morning presentation as well as at our visit to the aquarium)FIRST ASSIGNMENT, WHICH WILL BE DUE BY YOUR LAST POOL SESSION: (this will count as 30 percent of your grade for Mr Jones' part of the course!)
Research the ecology of coral reefs. I want you to use at least one magazine article, one book reference, and one Internet Web Page to find your information. Provide a bibliography (or works cited) page so you give credit to the sources you used. If you choose(see below) to do this as a paper, it should be no longer than 3 pages typed, double spaced, 12-point font and will touch upon the following topics:
I. Introduction to coral reefs
II. What environmental conditions are needed for coral reefs?
III. What is the Gulf Stream and what is its influence on Bermuda?
IV. What is the anatomy of a basic coral?
VI. What is the life of a coral like:
--how they "eat"
--how they reproduce
--how they compete
VII. What is a symbiotic relationship? Describe the symbiosis that exists in most corals.
VIII. What sorts of environmental hazards are currently threatening coral reefs on our planet?
(ps: use of diagrams is not against the law, and in fact is an encouraging, insightful thing to see in a science-oriented research work)

SECOND ASSIGNMENT: On our last day in Bermuda, you take an exam. Much of the exam is laboratory based. My part of the exam, however, is not. The topics below are ones you will need to be ready to write essays and short answers about on exam day.
1) Compare and contrast older versus more current methods for obtaining potable (drinking) water on the island of Bermuda. Describe measures Bermudans take for conserving water. (This one is hard to research in advance so ask about it during our visit to the island)
2) Explain how caves form. Incorporate some cave features into your discussion. Describe four cave features and how they were formed. Diagrams not required, but they may help you remember features. (research via internet links provided and through our visit to the caves)
3) Summarize Bermuda's geological development from past to present. Explain its early

!!!!?????QUESTIONS, ETC…
email me: Mr Jones** I say "choose to do" a paper because I am open to you doing a PowerPoint, an elementary school-kids' level "book", a Web Page, or possibly even a documentary film. Just let me know what your creative idea is, and if you take it far enough, you could be showing off your product to us in Bermuda, or perhaps secure yourself some extra credit.
